STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson University men's
basketball sophomore guard Broderick Hill (Largo/Bishop
McNamara) scored a career-high 12 points and freshman
forward Keith Holtman (Baltimore/Eastern) had a
career-high 11 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to a 64-60 victory
over Gallaudet Wednesday night at Carolyn Manuszek Student Union
Gymnasium.
With the win, Stevenson (6-15, 5-7 CAC) remained half-a-game
behind Marymount (Va.) for the final spot in the 2009 CAC Men's
Basketball Championship after the Saints upset conference unbeaten
Wesley at home, 88-74.
Marymount hosts Hood on Saturday before traveling to Stevenson
next Wednesday, February 11.
Trailing by 10 with 11:21 remaining, the Mustangs used a 15-4
run to take their first lead of the game, 47-46 at the 6:19 mark
with Hill totaling six points.
Following a layup by Gallaudet's Sekoe White, Hill would
add a second three-pointer to put Stevenson in front by two before
a 7-2 spurt by the Bison (10-11, 1-11 CAC) gave them the lead
by three, 55-52 with 3:53 to play.
On the ensuing possession, junior guard Irvin Jones
(Landover/Riverdale Baptist) his only basket of the game,
a three-pointer with 2:50 remaining to tie the game for the second
time.
Johnny Jackson answered on a driving layup to put the Bison
back in front before sophomore forward Matt Leddy (Great
Mills/Great Mills) hit the last of four consecutive
three-pointers for the Mustangs to give them the lead for good,
58-57 with 2:17 left.
Down by six, 63-57, with 20 seconds remaining, Jon Mowl hit
a three-pointer to cut the Gallaudet deficit in half before senior
guard Chaise Lancaster (Bowie/Northwestern) made
it a two possession game by hitting one of two free throws with 12
seconds left.
Hill scored nine of his 12 points in the second half while
sophomore guard Greg Collins (Baltimore/Western
Tech) finished with 10 points and seven
rebounds. Senior Ely Richardson (Hartford,
Conn./Suffield Academy) finished with four points and
six rebounds and Jones added three points and four assists.
White and Jackson led the Bison with 13 points each while Mowl
and Chi Pun had 10. Tony Tatum added seven points and a team-high
nine rebounds.
Stevenson will have a week to prepare for its next contest
against Marymount at home next Wednesday, February 11. The Mustangs
were edged by the Saints, 70-60 back on January 17.
