STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson University women's
basketball freshman guard Qiana Coleman (Ellicott
City/Mount Hebron) scored a team-high 12 points, one short
of her career-high, but the Mustangs could not overcome its poor
first half performance in falling to Salisbury 61-48 Saturday on
Senior Day at Carolyn Manuszak Student Union Gymnasium.
The win was the fourth-straight for the Sea Gulls (8-15, 8-6
CAC) who have eight of their last 13 after starting the season
0-11.
Stevenson (5-18, 3-11 CAC) totaled just 11 first half points
on 4-of-20 shooting while committing 14 turnovers and
trailing by 20 at halftime.
After a jumper by Coleman with 13:43 remaining in the first
half gave the Mustangs a 6-5 lead, they would not score again from
the field until a layup by sophomore center Alex Mercer
(Eldersburg/Liberty) with 2:41 left.
During that time, the team missed nine consecutive shots
from the floor and had nine turnovers in falling behind by
15, 23-8.
In the second half, Stevenson trailed by as many as 25 before a
13-1 run cut its deficit to 13 with 5:10 to play, but that would be
as close as the Mustangs would get in losing their sixth out of the
last seven.
Kylie Hall had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Sea Gulls
who went 21-of-31 from the free throw line and scored 21 points off
of 25 Mustang turnovers.
Senior guard Tara Galvin (Lititz, Pa./Manheim
Township) finished with seven points in her final home
game while senior Ashley Burrell (Baltimore/Institute of
Notre Dame) added four points, two blocks and two
steals.
Sophomore center Cecelia Laskauskas (Arbutus/Danbury
(Conn.)) had two points and one rebound in her final
collegiate game since transferring to Stevenson from Western
Connecticut.
The Mustangs conclude their 2008-09 season with back-to-back
road games at Hood on Wednesday and at Mary Washington next
Saturday. Wednesday's game with Hood will be at Knott Arena on the
campus of Mount St. Mary's in Emmittsburg. Game time is at 6:00
p.m.
