ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Camontae Griffin scored
30 points and St. Mary's (Md.) totaled 59 points and shot 78.1
percent from the floor in the second half as the No. 12-ranked
Seahawks scored 100 points for the second time in as many meetings
against Stevenson with a 103-71 victory Saturday at ARC Arena.
Griffin was one of four players to score in double figures for
St. Mary's (5-1, 2-0 CAC) as Mike Fitzpatrick added 16, Brian
Grashof 14 and Devin Spencer 11.
In the last meeting between the two teams, St. Mary's totaled
114 points in a 114-80 victory at ARC Arena on Jan. 29, 2009, the
last time Stevenson allowed a team to score 100 points.
The Seahawks, who scored 52 points in the paint and 32 off of 20
Mustang turnovers, outscored Stevenson 59-30 in the second half
where they made 25-of-32 attempts from the field, including 6-of-10
from three-point range.
The first half featured five ties and seven lead changes.
Stevenson senior guard Irvin Jones (Landover/Riverdale
Baptist) scored 10 of his career-high 14 points in the
opening half and his three-pointer with 1:47 remaining gave the
Mustangs a 40-38 lead.
However, Griffin scored four of the final six points for St.
Mary's who finished the half with a 6-1 run to take a 44-41
halftime lead. He added 17 of his 30 points in the second half to
lead the Seahawks' five starters who combined for 71 points,
including 36 in the second half.
Jones' previous career-high was 10 set nearly a year ago today
in a 104-92 four overtime at York (Pa.) on Dec. 6, 2008.
Junior guard Greg Collins (Baltimore/Western
Tech) added 13 and a team-high six rebounds for Stevenson
(1-7, 1-1 CAC). Junior guard Broderick Hill (Bowie/Bishop
McNamara) and sophomore center Keith Holtman
(Baltimore/Eastern) each had eight points.
The Mustangs travel to Shenandoah next Monday. Game time is at
7:00 p.m.
