TOWSON, Md. - The Stevenson men's basketball
team tied a Pride of Maryland Championship record with nine blocks,
but Adam Naymick totaled 17 points and 12 rebounds, both
game-highs, to lead Washington (Md.) to an 83-62 victory over the
Mustangs Saturday at Goucher's Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
Naymick, who totaled his first career double double in just 16
minutes, was one of four players in double figures for the Shoremen
(1-1). Alan Kines and Sal Schittino each had 12 while Kevin Breslin
had 11.
Junior Broderick Hill (Bowie/Bishop McNamara)
led the Mustangs (0-3) with a season-high 11 points, five short of
his career-high, while adding four rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore Jason Scroggins (Baltimore/Boys' Latin)
added 10 off the bench.
A 14-0 run by Washington gave the Shoremen a 13-point advantage
at 18-5 in the opening half as Stevenson was held scoreless for
6:56 until freshman Zack Cooke (Morgantown, WV/Cushing
Academy) hit two free throws with 11:16 to play.
The Mustangs rallied to cut the deficit to four at 27-23 with
3:53 remaining before Breslin scored five points in the final 46
seconds to give Washington a 36-30 halftime lead.
Kines totaled 12 points and six rebounds in the first half for
the Shoremen while Hill had nine points, three rebounds and three
assists.
Washington opened the second half with a 16-6 run to expand its
lead to 16 at 52-36 with 13:53 remaining behind eight points from
Naymick and six from Schittino. Schittino totaled all 12 of his
points in the second half where he was 4-of-5 from three-point
range after going 0-for-10 and 0-for-4 from behind the arc in the
first half.
The Shoremen led by as many as 27 in the second half en route to
their fifth win in the tournament's five-year history.
Stevenson tied the championship record for blocks in a game with
nine, set by Salisbury in 2006 in an 84-83 overtime victory versus
Stevenson. Senior Matt Leddy (Great Mills/Great
Mills) and sophomore Keith Holtman
(Baltimore/Eastern) each had three for the Mustangs.
Washington will play the winner between McDaniel and Goucher in
the fifth place game on Sunday while Stevenson will play the loser
in the seventh-place game at noon.
The Mustangs defeated Goucher in the seventh-place game last
year, 62-58 at home.
