ASHLAND, Va. - Stevenson field hockey freshman
Kaitlyn May (Arnold/Archbishop Spalding) scored
her first career goal off an assist from sophomore Jorden
Haney (Elkridge/Long Reach), but Mary McCarthy scored
twice to lead Randolph-Macon to a 4-1 non-conference victory
Thursday evening.
The loss was the third-straight for the Mustangs (3-8) and third
in the four road games this season.
Meanwhile, it was the fourth consecutive win for the Yellow
Jackets (4-8), all of which have come at home, after they
started the season 0-8.
Stevenson held a 10-9 edge in shots in the first half, but
trailed 2-1 at halftime after back-to-back Randolph-Macon goals
just 1:32 apart in the game's first 10 minutes.
McCarthy, who leads R-MC with seven goals and 17 points
this season, scored her first goal only eight minutes in off
an assist from Kate Coutherut before Meredith Young scored on a
pass from Nicole Klee at 9:32.
Coutherut and Klee each finished with two assists.
May would then pick up her first of the year with just over 20
minutes remaining in the half to pull the Mustangs within one.
McCarthy and Coutherut would connect again less than three
minutes into the second half before Klee picked up her second
assist on Jamie Shifrin's first goal of the season with 10 minutes
remaining.
Nicole Woodworth made five saves for the Yellow Jackets and has
now won her first four career starts since taking over for Kortney
McLaughlin.
Junior Kara Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) had 13
saves for Stevenson and now has 339 for her career, 31 shy of the
school record set by Kim Forbes from 1998-99.
The Mustangs return home to face No. 17 Christopher Newport
on Saturday at Caves Athletics Complex beginning at 3:30 p.m.
