STEVENSON, Md. - No. 19 Mary Washington used a
15-5 run over the final 1:19 of the first half and the first 4:17
of the second half to increase its lead to 15 en route to a 66-47
victory over the Stevenson University women's basketball team
Saturday afternoon at the Carolyn Manuszak Student Union Gymnasium.
Katie Wimmer led the Eagles (14-3, 6-2 CAC) with 24 points,
eight rebounds and four steals while Katy Larson added 11 points,
seven rebounds and four assists.
Trailing by five, the Mustangs (4-13, 2-6 CAC) had a chance to
cut the lead to three or less with less than one minute in the
first half, but back-to-back steals by Wimmer resulted in two
layups, giving Mary Washington a nine-point halftime advantage,
31-22.
Wimmer and Larson combined to score nine of the Eagles first 11
second half points as they built a 42-27 lead with 15:43 remaining.
After Wimmer's layup gave Mary Washington a 15-point cushion,
senior guard Tara Galvin (Lititz, Pa./Manheim
Township) scored the first of three-straight baskets for
the Mustangs as they forced two turnovers cut the deficit to nine.
Sophomore forward Jasmine Jarrett (Woodstock/Mount
Hebron) and freshman guard Amanda Craig
(Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) also scored during the
6-0 run.
However, the Eagles answered with an 8-2 run to push the lead
back to 15 with 9:53 left and never let it slip below 12 the rest
of the way.
Galvin finished with 16 points marking her seventh consecutive
game scoring in double figures. During that time, she has led the
team in scoring four times while totaling 22 three-pointers.
Craig finished with five points, eight rebounds and three
assists while sophomore forward Kristen Steiner (Forest
Hill/Fallston) had four points, game-high 10 rebounds and
three steals. It was the fifth game this season that Steiner
finished with at least 10 rebounds, inlcuding third in the last
five.
The Mustangs travel to St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday for a 6:00
p.m., tipoff with the Seahawks. St. Mary's handed Stevenson a 56-45
loss at home back on December 3.
