SALISBURY, Md. - Stevenson University women's
basketball senior guard Tara Galvin (Lititz, Pa./Manheim
Township) scored 10 of her season-high 19 points in the
second half, but it wasn't enough as Salisbury scored the game's
final four points en route to a 56-52 victory Monday evening at the
Maggs Center.
Janah Johnson totaled her second double double of the season
with 20 points and 14 rebounds, both game-highs, to lead the Sea
Gulls (3-13, 3-4 CAC) to their third win in the last five games.
Mustang sophomore guard Amanda Craig (Wilmington,
Del./St. Elizabeth) hit the first of two free throws with
20 seconds remaining in the second half to tie the game for the
sixth time.
After Craig missed the second, Salisbury got
the rebound and called a timeout with 15 seconds left to
set-up an attempt to win the game in regulation.
Johnson's attempt with six seconds to play was off the mark, but
she grabbed the rebound and scored on a putback in the paint while
being fouled by Stevenson sophomore forward Kristen Steiner
(Forest Hill/Fallston) with just four seconds remaining.
Johnson would miss the free throw, but Kylie Hall, who gave the
Sea Gulls their attempt at a game-winner by getting the rebound
following Craig's miss, grabbed Johnson's missed free throw which
led to an insurance layup by Glen Charleton with one second left.
The Mustangs (3-12, 1-5 CAC) trailed Salisbury by six at
halftime, 29-23, but outscored the Sea Gulls by two in the second
half thanks to hitting nine free throws which equalled the amount
of field goals they totaled from the floor.
However, Stevenson made just nine of their 14 second half
attempts from the line in the second half, missing five of
their last 12 attempts over the final 13:41. During that time,
the team saw a five-point lead evaporate as Salisbury outscored the
Mustangs, 22-13.
Steiner finished the game with two points, two rebounds, four
blocks and two steals in 22 minutes before fouling out while
freshman guard Joy Bettis (Laurel/Montrose
Christian) scored 10 points, her third game out of the
last five in double figures.
Senior forward Ashley Burrell (Baltimore/Institute of
Notre Dame) had three points and a team-high eight
rebounds.
Stevenson returns home to face Hood on Wednesday night at 6:00
p.m., on Faculty and Staff Night.
