SALISBURY, Md. - Stevenson University
men's basketball junior guard Greg Woody (Baltimore/Mount
Saint Joseph) scored a game-high 25 points, but the
Mustangs could not overcome a poor first half in which they shot
just 23.5 percent en route to an 82-76 loss at Salisbury Monday
night at the Maggs Center.
The win was the sixth in the last eight games for the Sea Gulls
(7-9, 4-3 CAC) after they started the year with just one win in
their first eight.
Salisbury held a 40-27 at halftime lead and led by as many
as 14 in the first half, 23-9 with 8:23 remaining.
Stevenson (3-12, 2-4 CAC) made just eight of 34 attempts from
the floor, including 2-of-9 from three-point range. One-third of
the Mustangs' points came from the free throw line where they
went 9-of-11.
With the Sea Gulls leading by 13 midway through the second half,
Stevenson used a 12-1 run to pull within two at 53-51 with 11:18
left. During the run, Woody scored six points on two three-pointers
while senior center Kerry Dugan (Sparks/Hereford)
added four.
Woody and Dugan combined for 26 of the Mustangs' 49 second half
points as Woody scored 16 and Dugan added 10. Dugan finished
the game with 12 points and six rebounds while senior guard
Chaise Lancaster (Bowie/Northwestern) had 12
points and a team-high seven boards.
Stevenson's seven-point second half advantage was aided by the
team converting 11 Sea Gull turnovers into 15 points while shooting
54.1 percent from the floor.
However, Salisbury managed to keep the Mustangs at bay thanks to
going 14-of-17 from the free throw line in the second half,
including 7-of-8 in the final 4:11.
Woody added four rebounds, four assists and four steals to go
along with his fifth 20-plus point performance of the season. After
his 25-point performance, he needs just 25 more to reach 1,000 for
his career.
Over his last five games, Woody has scored at least 24
points three times and has averaged 20.5 points per game.
Greg Palmer led five Sea Gulls in double figures with a
