Battista Scores First Career Goal to Beat R-MC in Overtime

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson University field hockey freshman Kelli Battista (Elkridge/Long Reach) scored her first career goal in the fifth minute of the first overtime to give the Mustangs a 2-1 victory over Randolph-Macon Sunday afternoon at the Caves Complex.

The win was the second in four games this season for Stevenson (2-2) who did not win its second game a year ago until its ninth game of the season.

Meanwhile, the loss was the second-straight overtime defeat for the Yellow Jackets (0-3) who beat the Mustangs 1-0 on Sept. 9, 2007 on a first half goal by Jill Dixon.

On Sunday, Dixon tied the game at 1-1 less than 17 minutes into the game after Stevenson senior Krissy Leventis (Baltimore/Lutheran) gave her team a 1-0 lead just 43 seconds in.

However, neither team would score for the remainder of regulation although the Mustangs had some excellent opportunities.

Stevenson outshot Randolph-Macon 13-4 in regulation, including 6-1 in the first half and 7-3 in the second, but the Yellow Jackets' Ashley Crouch and Becky Clark kept the visitors in the game with some strong defensive play.

Crouch finished the game with five saves in goal while Clark totaled three defensive saves, including two in the final 16 minutes to keep the game tied and force overtime.

In the first three minutes of overtime, Randolph-Macon totaled two of its six shots in the game, the second of which was turned away by Stevenson sophomore keeper Kara Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) after junior Sarah Bauer (Baltimore/Perry Hall) made a defensive save on Lindsey Baynham in the second minute.

Battista then scored the game-winner on a rebound after junior Margaret Wolfe (Baltimore/Perry Hall) had her shot off a penalty corner blocked.

Zimmerman finished the game with three saves and just one goal allowed in 74:53 of action. Over the last three games, she has surrendered just two goals in a span of 214:53 while totaling 15 saves.

The Mustangs will now have six days off before returning to action at home against Cedar Crest next Saturday, September 13. Game time is at noon.
