STEVENSON, Md. - With a 25-4, 25-11, 25-9 sweep
of Hood Thursday night at the Student Union Gymnasium, the
Stevenson University women's volleyball moved into sole possession
of third place in the CAC after Mary Washington fell in
straight sets at St. Mary's (Md.).
The Mustangs (17-2, 2-1 CAC), who needed just 59 minutes to pick
up the victory, were led by junior Danielle Helwig
(Ellicott City/Howard) who had a team-high six kills along
with eight digs. In addition, the team also won 24 points behind
Helwig's serve, including 11 of the final 12 in set one.
Freshman Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) and
sophomore Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) each
totaled five kills while Carney also added eight digs. Playing
libero in the final two sets, junior Jen Schissler
(Sykesville/Liberty) led Stevenson with a game-high 10
digs with senior Julie Olson (Spofford,
N.H./Keene) adding seven.
Coming off a thumb injury, junior Brittany Umetin (Havre
de Grace/Mt. Zion) totaled two kills, 15 assists and three
digs before freshman Amy Rudolph (Northeast/Rising
Sun) had five assists and three digs as the team's primary
setter in set three.
The Mustangs hit .253 as a team, committing just seven errors in
79 attempts, compared to minus-.122 for the Blazers.
Hood (0-10, 0-4 CAC) had 21 attack errors against only 11 kills
and were also limited by eight receiving errors and eight
ball-handling errors. Katie Worthington and Leah Garland led the
Blazers with three kills each.
Stevenson will have the next five days to prepare for next
Wednesday's showdown with Mary Washington while the Eagles will
travel to Washington (Md.) on Saturday. Game time next Wednesday is
at 7:00 p.m.
