STEVENSON, Md. - With three more wins on
Saturday, the Stevenson University women's volleyball team ran its
regular season win streak to 19 with wins over Manhattanville,
Goucher and Marymount (Va.) on Saturday at Student Union Gymnasium.
The Mustangs (12-0) defeated Manhattanville 25-16, 25-3, 25-5
before beating Goucher 10-25, 25-11, 26-24, 25-8. Stevenson picked
up its second sweep in two home quad matches this season with a
25-13, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18 victory over CAC foe Marymount
(Va.).
A year after winning a school record 21 games, the Mustangs are
off to their best start in school history. During its current
season winning streak, the team has lost just three out of 39 sets.
After seeing her first action of the season as the team's
primary setter with eight assists in the final set against
Lancaster Bible, freshman Amy Rudolph (Northeast/Rising
Sun) expanded upon that role, totaling 84 assists over the
three games in addition to adding seven kills, 27 digs and six
block assists.
Senior Alana Eller (Ellicott City/Centennial)
had 25 kills and 32 digs while sophomore Alex
Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) had a team-high 29 kills and
senior Julie Olson (Spofford, NH/Keene) totaled a
team-high 34 digs. Mercer also added nine total blocks.
In a convincing win over Manhattanville, Stevenson used a
complete team effort as 14 players saw action with six of those
totaling at least four kills, led by Mercer and freshman
Paige Norvell (Newark, Del./St. Elizabeth) who
each had five.
Rudolph had a strong all-around performance against the
Valiants, hitting .363 with four kills, 25 assists, eight digs and
two block assists.
Against Goucher, the Gophers took the first set in a 3-1 loss,
ending a 25 set win streak for Stevenson. Rudolph added 26
more assists along with a team-high 11 digs. Eller just missed her
third double double of the season with 12 kills and nine digs.
Mercer had nine kills as she and Eller combined for 21 of the
team's 37 kills.
In the final game versus Marymount (Va.), Eller just missed
a double double again, finishing with nine kills and 15 digs.
Meanwhile, junior Danielle Helwig (Ellicott
City/Howard) totaled her first career double
double in her first season as a Mustang with 10 kills and 11
digs.
Mercer contributed a season-high 15 kills, three short of her
career-high set against Philadelphia Biblical on Oct. 25, 2007 and
Olson had 25 digs, four short of her career-high set in 2006.
Rudolph had a career-high 33 assists to go along with two
kills, six digs and two block assists.
Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday at Gallaudet beginning at
7:00 p.m., looking to avenge a 3-0 loss suffered to the Bison a
year ago.
