YORK, Pa. - York (Pa.) scored the game's first
10 points en route to a 22-point halftime lead and never looked
back as the Spartans won their seventh-straight with an 81-45
victory over Stevenson Saturday evening at the Grumbacher Center.
The loss was the sixth consecutive for the Mustangs (1-5, 0-2
CAC) on the road and sixth-straight conference loss. Sophomore
forward Denita Brown (Laurel/Montrose
Christian) led the team with 11 points while
sophomore forward Kristen Steiner
(Forest Hill/Fallston) had a game-high eight
rebounds.
The Spartans (7-1, 2-0 CAC), who have not lost since a
season-opening 82-76 loss at home to No. 13 Messiah, forced 27
turnovers and held Stevenson to just 29.3 percent shooting from the
floor.
York scored 26 points off turnovers, including 16 in the first
half, while also totaling 16 fastbreak points and 15
steals.
Keli Ward led the Spartans with a game-high 14 points,
eight assists, five rebounds and five steals. April Sparkman
also had 14 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists
and three steals.
Any hopes of a second half comeback for Stevenson were hampered
by the team's poor shooting and 14 turnovers. The Mustangs hit just
9-of-32 attempts from the floor and only 3-of-9 from the free throw
line while York used a 12-2 run midway through the half to increase
its lead to 30 with 7:20 remaining.
Freshman forward Joy Bettis (Laurel/Montrose
Christian) contributed seven points and three rebounds for
Stevenson who outrebounded the Spartans, 43-42.
The Mustangs will now have a 10-day layoff for final exams
before returning to action on Monday, December 15 at Division II
Bloomsburg. Game time is at 6:00 p.m.
