SHERMAN, Tex. - Stevenson women's basketball
freshman Breonna Brewer (Baltimore/Polytechnic)
scored a career-high 18 points, but Austin made all six of its free
throws in the final 24 seconds to pull out a 69-61 victory
over the Mustangs Saturday at Hughey Gym.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Kangaroos (4-5)
and was their third in the last five, all of which have come at
home.
Trailing by five, Brewer's lone three-pointer of the game came
with 32 seconds left cut Stevenson's deficit to just two, 63-61.
Hoping for a missed free throw and a rebound to have a shot
at tying the game or taking the lead, Brewer committed her fourth
foul and the seventh of the half for the Mustangs
(1-7), sending Amber Stafford to the line for a 1-and-1 on
Austin's ensuing possession.
However, Stafford hit both free throws to extend the Kangaroos'
lead to four with 24 seconds remaining. To make matters worse,
Brewer committed her fifth foul with 17 seconds left, leading to
two more free throws by Maegan Fitzgerald.
Leading by six, a steal by Liz Preas and two more free throws
with six seconds left, sealed the victory for Austin.
To set the stage for its attempt at completing the comeback,
Stevenson used a 10-1 run to reduce its largest deficit of the
game, 62-51 with 4:46 left. Brewer scored five of her 18 points
during the run while senior guard Tara Galvin (Lititz,
Pa./Hempfield) hit her fourth three-pointer of the game en
route to finishing with 12 points.
The Mustangs' 11-point deficit came after there were four ties
and three lead changes in the second half alone.
In the first half, Stevenson led by as many as six
following an 11-5 run to start the game, but trailed by as
many as 10.
Sophomore forward Denita Brown (Laurel/Montrose
Christian) finished with 11 points, six rebounds, four
blocks and three assists.
Fitzgerald had 17 points for the Kangaroos with Katy Williams
adding 14 and Preas and Courtney Johnson totaling 10 each.
Stevenson travels to Dallas on Sunday. Game time is at 3:00 p.m.
