Mustangs Advance to CAC Semifinals, Beat York (Pa.)

Box score

STEVENSON, Md. - Senior Alana Eller (Ellicott City/Centennial) totaled her sixth double double of the season with 14 kills and 16 digs to lead the Stevenson University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over York (Pa.) Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the CAC Volleyball Championship at Student Union Gymnasium.

With the 22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 win, the third-seeded Mustangs (31-6) picked up their first CAC tournament victory, avenging a 3-0 loss suffered at York a year ago. The victory also erases Stevenson's four-game losing streak to the Spartans, including a 3-1 loss suffered at York back on September 23.

The sixth-seeded Spartans (19-15) held on for a 25-22 victory in the first set after scoring seven of nine points to take a 17-12 lead.

However, the Mustangs would rally to take the final three sets, totaling 34 of their 47 kills in the process.

Sophomore Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) had a team-high 15 kills while sophomore Dani Katsampis (New Windsor/Francis Scott Key) added nine.

Defensively, both teams were evenly matched as Stevenson had 11 total blocks and 69 digs while York had 14 total blocks and 68 digs.

Senior Julie Olson (Spofford, N.H./Keene) led the way with a team-high 18 digs and junior Brittany Umetin (Havre de Grace/Mt. Zion) had 11 to go along with 39 assists.

At the net, freshman Jen Glock (Westminster/Westminster) had five total blocks and three kills. Freshman Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) had three of the Mustangs service aces.

Julie Coombs also had a double double for the Spartans with 10 kills and 12 digs while Heather Bucher had eight kills, nine digs and 19 assists. Amanda Clemens totaled a game-high 20 digs.

Stevenson will travel to St. Mary's (Md.) on Thursday in the tournament semifinals. Game time is at 7:00 p.m. The Seahawks handed the Mustangs a 3-0 loss at Student Union Gymnasium on October 16.

In the other quarterfinal match, No. 4 seed Mary Washington defeated No. 5 seed Gallaudet at home, 3-0.
