STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson University men's
basketball senior Kerry Dugan (Sparks/Hereford)
totaled his second double double in the last three games with
14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to their
first win of the season, 62-58 over Goucher Sunday afternoon at
Student Union Gymnasium.
With the win, Stevenson (1-5) finished in seventh place in the
2008 Provident Pride Tournament and ended a seven-game losing
streak that dated back to Feb. 23, 2008.
Dugan was one of four Mustangs in double figures with
fellow senior Chaise Lancaster
(Bowie/Northwestern) leading the way with 17 points.
Lancaster was selected to the all-tournament team after
averaging a team-best 14.3 points over the three games in
the tournament. He also averaged 2.3 assists and shot
61.5 percent from the floor, both team-highs.
Sophomore Greg Collins (Baltimore/Western
Tech) added 11 points while sophomore
Sean Ussery (Waldorf/LaPlata) scored a
career-high 10 to go along with five rebounds and three steals.
Sunday's game featured eight ties and four lead changes,
the last coming on a layup by Lancaster with 1:55 remaining in
the game to give Stevenson a 57-56 lead.
Over the next 1:47, the Mustangs would hold the Gophers
(0-4) scoreless on four consecutive possessions while getting three
points from Ussery and two from Lancaster to seal the victory. The
two also combined to go 3-of-4 from the free throw line in the
final 18 seconds.
Amir Akim led Goucher with a game-high 25 points to go along
with five rebounds.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday when it opens CAC play
against St. Mary's (Md.), the 2008 Provident Pride Tournament,
champions. Game time is at 8:00 p.m., following the women's game.
