CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Washington (Md.) received 40
points from its bench and scored 26 points off of 24 Stevenson
turnovers as the Shoremen posted an 89-76 victory over the
Stevenson University men's basketball team Tuesday night in the
first round of the Provident Pride Tournament at Cain Athletic
Center.
The win was the first of the season for Washington (1-1) who was
led by Tim Kohlrus' 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists. The
Shoremen will play St. Mary's (Md.) at 8:00 p.m., on Saturday at
Stevenson's Student Union Gymnasium after the Seahawks handed
defending champion McDaniel an 84-77 defeat Tuesday night.
The Mustangs (0-4) had four players in double figures,
highlighted by a career-high 20 points from sophomore Greg
Collins (Baltimore/Western Tech). He also added five
rebounds and was 7-of-9 from the floor.
With 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, senior Kerry
Dugan (Sparks/Hereford) totaled his first double double
since Feb. 24, 2007 when he also had 10 points and 11 rebounds in a
94-92 overtime victory over Chestnut Hill in the championship game
of the NEAC Tournament.
Stevenson jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the game's first two
minutes, four of which came from junior Greg Woody
(Baltimore/Mount Saint Joseph), and led by as many as
nine, 13-4 with 16:04 remaining in the first half.
However, the Shoremen answered with a 26-7 run over the next 10
minutes to tie the game and build a 10-point lead with just over
six minutes left.
The Mustangs cut the lead to three, 36-33 with 1:26 to play
before halftime, but Washington scored the final four points to
take a seven-point halftime lead.
Half of the Shoremen's 40 first half points came from their
bench with 22 coming in the paint.
In the second half, Washington scored 14 of the first 18 points
to increase its lead to 15 and led by as many as 25 with 11:02
remaining while not letting it slip below 11 the rest of the way.
Stevenson did much better in the second half, scoring 22 of its
43 points in the paint and getting 13 points from its bench, but
the team was 1-of-14 from three-point range and 14-of-22 from the
free throw line after going 11-for-13 in the first half.
Woody finished the game with 19 points and is averaging 27.0
over his last two and 19.7 this season. Senior Chaise
Lancaster (Bowie/Northwestern) added 11.
The Mustangs will face defending champion McDaniel at home
Saturday at 3:45 p.m., following Goucher versus Frostburg State at
1:30 p.m. In other action at Stevenson on Saturday, Salisbury will
play Johns Hopkins at 6:00 p.m., and St. Mary's will face
Washington at 8:00 p.m.
