STEVENSON, Md. - The Stevenson University
women's volleyball team swept all three games of a quad match at
home on Saturday, improving its school record total for wins in a
season to 25 with victories over Philadelphia Biblical, Ursinus and
Albright at Student Union Gymnasium.
The Mustangs (25-6) beat Philadelphia Biblical for the second
time this season 25-21, 26-24, 25-18 before downing Ursinus 21-15,
22-25, 28-26, 26-24 and Albright 25-16, 25-20, 25-16.
Senior Alana Eller (Ellicott City/Centennial)
led Stevenson with two double doubles in three matches, posting 11
kills and 21 digs versus Ursinus and 11 kills and 12 digs against
Albright. She was one of three Mustangs to total at least 20 digs
against Ursinus.
Sophomore Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty)
totaled 31 kills over the three games along with nine total blocks,
highlighted by 16 kills and six total blocks versus Ursinus.
Also against the Bears, junior Brittany Umetin (Havre de
Grace/Mt. Zion) totaled a season-high 54 assists, one shy
of her career-high set against Frostburg State on Sept. 19, 2007.
She also added 16 digs.
Senior Julie Olson (Spofford, N.H./Keene) had
25 digs, marking the fourth time this year she has had 20 or more,
while freshman Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson)
added 20 digs and nine kills, both career-highs, just missing
her first double double.
As a team, Stevenson totaled 65 kills and hit .238 against the
Bears.
Against Albright, all 14 players played at least one set for the
Mustangs, nine of which had at least one kill.
Senior Shelly May (Bel Air/Fallston) had five
kills, four digs and three block assists while junior
Danielle Helwig (Ellicott City/Howard) totaled 10
kills for the sixth time this season and freshman Brooke
Gilley (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) had three kills, one
short of her career-high.
Stevenson, who has already secured the No. 3 seed in the CAC
Volleyball Championship with wins over Gallaudet and Mary
Washington, concludes its conference schedule on Tuesday when it
travels to Wesley. Game time is at 7:00 p.m.
