STEVENSON, Md. - St. Mary's (Md.) had 10 total
blocks while limiting the Stevenson University women's volleyball
team to a .027 hitting percentage as the Seahawks snapped the
Mustangs 16-game home win streak with a 25-18, 25-16, 25-20 victory
Thursday evening at Student Union Gymnasium.
Prior to Thursday night, the last loss for Stevenson (22-5, 4-3
CAC) at home came back on Oct. 2, 2007 in a 3-1 defeat to
Salisbury.
On Thursday, the Mustangs totaled 26 kills, but also committed
23 errors in 112 attempts while totaling 10 reception errors and
six service errors.
After totaling 17 errors and just 14 kills in falling behind
2-0, Stevenson rebounded in the third, hitting .176 with 12 kills
and just six errors. However, 10 of the the Seahawks' final 17
points came on Mustang errors, including four on reception errors
and two on service errors.
The trio of senior Alana Eller (Ellicott
City/Centennial), sophomore Dani Katsampis (New
Windsor/Francis Scott Key) and sophomore Alex
Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) totaled 21 of the team's 26
kills, but also committed 17 of the team's 23 errors.
Eller led Stevenson with eight kills and 15 digs, but was
limited by six errors. Katsampis had seven kills, but also had
seven errors and Mercer totaled six kills with four errors in 19
attempts.
Junior Brittany Umetin (Havre de Grace/Mt.
Zion) had 24 assists while freshman Alexa Carney
(Towson/Towson) had 11 digs, two shy of her career-high.
Claire Kodan and Sarah Gregorini each had eight kills for St.
Mary's (21-4, 6-0 CAC) who moved back into a first place tie in the
CAC with Salisbury as both team's have identical 6-0 conference
records. Both teams are idle until next Friday's showdown in
St. Mary's City.
Stevenson travels to local rival Goucher next Tuesday, October
21. Game time is at 7:00 p.m.
