WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Stevenson University
women's volleyball team dropped its opening game to Roanoke 25-22,
25-8, 25-16 before bouncing back to defeat host Catholic for the
second time this season 25-15, 25-21, 25-16 Saturday at the DuFour
Center.
The Mustangs (21-4), who have won six of their last
10 since starting the season with 15-straight victories, were
limited by errors in their three-set loss to Roanoke.
Stevenson had 19 attack errors and hit just .059 compared to a
.323 hitting percentage and 39 kills for the Maroons (18-4) who are
off to their best start in school history.
Junior Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) had 10
of the Mustangs' 25 kills, but also had seven of their 19 errors.
Four players committed at least three errors.
Senior Alana Eller (Ellicott City/Centennial),
the team's top offensive threat through the first 13
games, had three kills and a team-high 18 digs. In six games
since returning from injury, she has led Stevenson with 77 digs.
Junior Brittany Umetin (Havre de Grace/Mt.
Zion) had two kills, 19 assists and six digs.
Against Catholic (7-21), freshman Paige Norvell (Newark,
Del./St. Elizabeth's) totaled a career-high 10 kills while
hitting .556 and adding four digs. Mercer and sophomore
Dani Katsampis (New Windsor/Francis Scott Key)
each had eight kills.
Eller added 14 more digs and junior Danielle Helwig
(Ellicott City/Howard) had 10. Freshman Alexa
Carney (Towson/Towson) had six kills, five digs, two
service aces and two block assists.
Stevenson hosts CAC foe Marymount (Va.) Tuesday night at 7:00
p.m. Prior to the game, the team will honor seniors Shelly
May (Bel Air/Fallston), Jessica Smiley
(Baltimore/Kenwood), Julie Olson (Spofford,
N.H./Keene) and Eller.
