Box Score STEVENSON, Md. - With a 3-0 sweep of Mary
Washington at Student Union Gymnasium Wednesday night, the
Stevenson University women's volleyball team moved into sole
possession of third place in the CAC standings, beating the
Eagles 27-25, 25-19, 25-22.
The Mustangs (18-2, 3-1 CAC) are now just one game behind
Salisbury and St. Mary's (Md.) who are tied for first place with
4-0 conference records. Stevenson is also just three wins shy of
tying the school record for wins set in 2005 and 2007.
On Wednesday night, the Mustangs avenged a 3-0 loss to Mary
Washington a year ago thanks to 37 kills and a .244 hitting
percentage.
Sophomore Dani Katsampis (New Windsor/Francis Scott
Key) and junior Danielle Helwig (Ellicott
City/Howard) each led the way with a team-high nine kills
while sophomore Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty)
added seven.
In addition to a key conference victory, Stevenson also
benefited from the return of senior Alana Eller (Ellicott
City/Centennial) who had missed the last six matches while
battling an ankle injury. In her first game back, Eller played
libero where she totaled a team-high 13 kills along with two kills
on nine attempts.
Junior Brittany Umetin (Havre de Grace/Mt.
Zion) totaled a season-high 30 assists to go along with
three kills, five digs and two block assists.
With the first set tied at 25-25, freshman Jen Glock
(Westminster/Westminster) had back-to-back blocks, one
solo and one assisted to give the Mustangs a 27-25 victory. Later,
freshman Paige Norvell (Newark, Del/St. Elizabeth)
totaled the second of back-to-back kills on game point to seal
the victory for Stevenson.
Stevenson returns to action this weekend in a tri-match at
Frostburg State, facing the Bobcats at 1:00 p.m., before playing
Hilbert at 3:00 p.m.
