OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Five different players
scored a point as the Stevenson University field hockey team used a
total team effort to pick up their sixth win of the season, 3-1
over Hood Wednesday evening at the Caves Complex.
The win gives the Mustangs (6-6, 2-2 CAC) their most wins in a
season since the team went 6-13 in 2002. The school record for wins
in a season is nine set in 1997 and 2000.
The story of the game was in the first half where Stevenson
built a 2-0 lead, outshooting the Blazers 7-0 while holding an 8-0
edge in penalty corners.
Senior Krissy Leventis (Baltimore/Lutheran),
who entered the game ranked sixth in the CAC in goals, picked
up her team-leading seventh of the season just over nine minutes in
when she redirected a loose ball in front of the net.
The Mustangs would hold a one-goal advantage until senior
Cat Connelly (Fallston/Fallston), the CAC's leader
in assists with six, picked up her second goal of the year off an
assist from junior Sarah Bauer (Baltimore/Perry
Hall) with just 1:22 remaining in the half.
Freshman Kelli Battista (Elkridge/Long Reach)
then scored off an assist from high school teammate, freshman
Jorden Haney (Elkridge/Long Reach), with just
under 10 minutes left in the game to give Stevenson a
commanding a 3-0 lead.
Hood (1-6, 0-2 CAC) would break-up the Mustangs' bid for the
shutout with just 31 seconds remaining when Brandy Noel scored her
team-leading third goal on a pass from Crystal Parker.
Parker also had two defensive saves for the Blazers.
Sophomore Kara Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) was
required to make just one save in picking up her sixth win in goal
for Stevenson while Jen Lacy stopped three shots for Hood.
The Mustangs return to action Saturday when they host Lebanon
Valley in a non-conference contest beginning at noon.
