Haverford, PA.- The Mustangs open their season
at the Haverford College Invitational. The Mustangs opened
Pool play in Pool B with Arcadia, St. Anselm and Rutgers
Camden.
Villa opened the tournament Saturday morning with a 3-0
victory over St. Anselm (30-18, 30-21, 30-21). The Mustangs
then defeated Rutgets-Camden 3-0 (30-15, 30-15, 30-6) in
their final match of the first day of the tournament.
Villa opened up Day 2 versus Arcadia, and once again was victorious
in 3 straight games(30-21, 30-28, 30-28). Sophomore
Marisa Bender (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown)
led the Mustangs o the win with13 digs, 12 kills, and a .571
kill percentage. Junior Brittany Umetin (Havre de
Grace, MD/ Mt Zion) orchestrated the win with a team-high
30 set assists.
Villa Julie then fell to #23 Haverford College, which defeated
Catholic University 3-0 in the semifinals,
3-0. The Mustangs played them tough, falling
32-30, 30-22, 30-21. The 'Stangs were led by sophomore
Marisa Bender (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown) who
tallied 10 kills and 14 digs. VJ ends the first weekend
with an impressive 3-1 record, and a good feel how the rest of
their season could go.
At the conclusion of the tournament Junior setter
Brittany Umetin was named to the Haverford
Invitational All-Tounament team for her stellar play over the
course of the weekend.
The Mustangs are back in action on Thursday as they travel to The
College of Notre Dame for a 7pm start.
