Stevenson, Md.-The Mustangs (1-5) fall just short of a win
against their second conference opponent, York College (2-3).
The Spartans took an early eight-point lead, while the Mustangs
had yet to score. A jumper from Ely Richardson (Hartford,
CT/Suffield Academy) put Villa Julie on the scoreboard,
and a three-pointer from Jason Lambert
(Bloomfield,CT/Kingwood-Oxford) brought the score to 9-5
with the Spartans trying to hold on to their lead.
York continued to increase its lead over the Mustangs as the
game clock wound down, but the Mustangs worked hard on offense in
an attempt to catch up to their opponents. The Mustangs trailed by
14 at the end of the half at 39-25.
Villa Julie's men returned to the court ready to turn the game
around, but with 15 minutes left on the clock, the Spartans were
still ahead by 16 points. The Mustangs picked up the tempo, and a
steal from Greg Woody (Baltimore, MD/Mt. St.
Joseph) followed by two points from
Lambert off the fast-break proved that the
Mustangs wouldn't give up without a fight.
The Mustangs continued to raise their intensity, and cut the
Spartans' lead down to four with seven minutes left to play, but
struggled to get back in control of the scoreboard. After their
strong efforts to take over the game and end with a win, the
Mustangs were defeated 74-68.
Leading the Mustangs with 16 points was Woody,
followed by Justin Miles (Baltimore, MD/Frederick
Douglas) with 14 and Mike Turner (Baltimore,
MD/Polytechnic) with 10. Richardson led
the team in rebounds with eight, while Miles
grabbed
six.
For their next game, the Mustangs travel to contest CAC-rival
Wesley College on Dec. 5 at 8 p.m.
