Box Score Owings Mills, MD.- Five different players
scored goals to lead Virginia Wesleyan (1-2) to a 5-1 win over
Villa Julie (1-3) in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday
afternoon. The Marlins built a 3-0 lead before Villa Julie could
answer in the second half.
A pair of quick goals gave the Marlins the early jump.
Chrissy Clancy (Oak Hill , Va. / Oakton) scored
the game's first goal 8:44 into play. She was assisted by
Nicole Duncan (Longmeadow , Ma. / Longmeadow ),
who also scored Virginia Wesleyan's second goal of the game just
under five minutes later. Clancy set up the Marlins' final goal of
the first half as Megan May (McLean , Va. McLean )
sent a shot to the long-left side of the net to make it 3-0, a
socre the Marlins carried into the half.
Villa Julie broke into the scoring column on its first shot of
the game. Emily Pullarn (Perry Hall, Md. / Perry
Hall) inserted a corner which was tapped onto Leigh
Geary's (Elkton , Md. / Elkton) stick by Cat
Connelley (Fallston , Md. / Fallston). Geary's shot from
the top of the circle found the cage to make it 3-1. The Mustangs
added four more shots, but was unable to further chip away at the
Virginia Wesleyan lead. The Marlins added a pair of insurance
markers late to secure the 5-1 win.
Despite the score, Villa's Melinda Muir
(Princess Anne, Md. / Washington) played an outstanding game on the
defensive end. The freshman thwarted numerous Wesleyan rushes, and
was credited with a defensive save in the scramble before Virginia
Wesleyan's first goal.
With the loss, Villa Julie falls to 1-3 on the season, while
Virginia Wesleyan picked up its first win to move to 1-2. The
Mustangs return to action next Thursday at Randolph-Macon Women's
College.
