Geary's (Elkton, MD / Elkton) shot eight-and-a-half
minutes into the game to deliver Villa Julie a 1-0 win over Goucher
in Capital Athletic Conference field hockey action on Thursday. The
win was Villa's first in conference play this season.
The game's lone goal came on a penalty corner. Geary fired a
blast from the top of the circle which found its way onto the stick
of her high school teammate, Meghan Melvin. Melvin's redirect
sailed high to the left of Goucher keeper Aline
Haddad . It was the only one of Villa's seven penalty
corners the Mustangs were able to convert on. Haddad stopped
three shots to keep her Gophers within one the rest of the
way.
That lead proved insurmountable for Goucher. Kaitlin
Brzozowski (Bel Air, MD / Fallston) needed only one save
to pick up her first career shutout. A stingy Mustangs'
defense limited Goucher to just four shots in the contest.
With the win, Villa improves to 5-8 (1-3 CAC), while Goucher
slides to 1-9 (0-4 CAC). Villa returns to action on Saturday
against Catholic University.
