No. 9 Johns Hopkins Gives Mustangs First Loss

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - In a battle of two of the three remaining unbeaten teams in NCAA Division III women's volleyball, No. 9 Johns Hopkins downed Stevenson 3-1 Thursday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  Set scores were 25-23, 22-25, 25-16, 25-13.

  • The first set featured a total of 11 ties.
  • Johns Hopkins (21-0) scored four straight points to take a 17-14 lead on a kill by Simone Bliss.
  • The Mustangs (23-1) chipped away and forged the sets 11th tie, 22-2, on a kill by Katie Leftridge after a Blue Jay attack error.
  • The guests scored the next two points to go up 24-22, but with Hopkins serving for set point, a Mackenzie Blevins kill extended the set.
  • A Stevenson attack error closed out the opening frame.

  • The Blue Jays opened an early 8-5 lead.
  • With Hopkins leading 9-6, five straight points by Stevenson with Caroline Dangel serving put the hosts on top 11-9 following back-to-back service aces.
  • The Mustangs extended the lead to 19-14 on a Leftridge kill.
  • Johns Hopkins closed within 20-18 before a block by Shannon Baily and Victoria Prokic and a Blue Jay attack error pushed the lead to four, 22-18.
  • Stevenson tied the match on a Blevins kill.

  • Johns Hopkins jumped out to leads of 7-2 and 13-7.
  • The Mustangs chipped away, and a Blevins kill, followed by back-to-back Hopkins miscues, pulled the hosts within three, 17-14.
  • Johns Hopkins responded with three straight points to double the lead, making it 20-14.
  • The Blue Jays had five of the last six points of the frame to go up 2-1.

  • The guests scored the first six points of the set and led 8-1 before Dangel opened a run of three straight Mustang points with a kill.
  • Johns Hopkins scored six straight to put the set and the match away to go up 14-4.
  • A Leftridge kill, followed by a Blue Jay attack error, pulled the Mustangs within 23-13, but Hopkins had the final two points to claim the match, its 21st straight win.

  • Stevenson's 23-match win streak to start the season finishes tied for the best in program history.
  • The Mustangs also saw a 19-match home win streak snapped.
  • Stevenson hit a season-low .088 for the match, while the Blue Jays hit .193.
  • Leftridge led the Mustangs with 11 kills and 12 digs, while Blevins had seven kills, six digs and five blocks.
  • Baily added six kills and two blocks, while Prokic had six blocks to go with her five kills.
  • Dangel registered 16 assists and seven digs, while Julie Nightwine had 11 assists and eight digs.
  • Haley Hoover added four blocks.
  • Attendance was a season-high 554.
  • Johns Hopkins and Tufts remain the two unbeaten teams in Division III.

 

  • Stevenson returns to action Tuesday, October 22, traveling to Marymount (Va.) for a 7 pm contest.
  • The Mustangs return home the following Tuesday, October 29, hosting Alvernia in a 7 pm MAC Commonwealth match at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
