Marymount Sweeps Mustangs 3-0

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Visiting Marymount University, receiving votes in this week's AVCA Division III poll, swept a non-conference women's volleyball match 3-0 Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-14, 26-24, 25-19.

  • Marymount (17-2) jumped out to a 10-4 lead before back-to-back kills by Katie Leftridge and Mackenzie Blevins pulled Stevenson (11-9) within four.
  • Four straight points capped by a block by Victoria Prokic and Moriah Savage pulled the Mustangs within one, 12-11.
  • Leading 14-13, Marymount reeled off nine straight points to go up 23-13.  A Saint service error halted the run.  The guests ended the set on an 11-1 run.

  • The second set featured 18 ties.
  • Marymount carved out a 16-13 lead before a service error, a Leftridge kill and a Saint attack error tied the set 16-16.
  • Stevenson took a 17-16 lead on a kill by Darian Hileman.
  • Stevenson scored two straight points to take a 24-23 lead on a kill by Blevins and were serving for match point, but a Mykael Johnson kill forced the 18th and final tie.
  • A service ace by Marymount gave it a 2-0 lead.

  • Marymount rattled off 10 straight points to take a 14-3 lead.
  • The Mustangs battled back with nine straight points of their own, and pulled within two on a Hileman service ace, one of two during the run.  Blevins and Leftridge each had two kills during the run.
  • Stevenson pulled within one, 16-15, on a Blevins kill.
  • Marymount scored the final four points of the set to pull away and seal the win.

  • Both teams hit over .200 on the night, with Marymount hitting .233 and Stevenson .202.  The Mustangs hit .333 in the middle frame.
  • Leftridge hit .353 and totaled 14 kills and eight digs.
  • Blevins and Savage each had seven kills, with Blevins hitting .417.
  • Hileman notched 11 digs, with Emily Pellini adding 10.
  • Emily Castro recorded 15 assists, while Julie Nightwine narrowly missed a double-double with 14 assists and nine digs.
  • Prokic had a team-high three blocks.
  • Marymount extended its win streak to seven matches.

Mackenzie Blevins' kill in the third set capped a 12-2 Stevenson run and pulled the Mustangs within one in the third set.

  • Stevenson travels to Lexington, Virginia hosted by Washington and Lee on Saturday.  The Mustangs face Lynchburg at 2:15 pm and the host Generals at 4:30.
  • The Mustangs return home next Wednesday with a non-conference match against Frostburg State slated for 6 pm.
