FOX CHAPEL, Pa. - The line of sophomores Megan Alexander, Molly O'Neil and McKenzie Taggart totaled all six points as the Stevenson women's ice hockey team posted its third series sweep of the season with a 2-1 victory over Chatham Sunday at Shady Side Academy.
The Mustangs (8-14-1), who started the season 0-9 on the road, concluded their road schedule at 5-3, including wins in three of their last five. The team is also 3-4 in one-goal games this season.
After a scoreless first period, Taggart scored her team-leading eighth power-play goal 5:18 into the second period on assists from Alexander and O'Neil. Taggart ranks tied for second in Division III in power-play goals scored this season.
Brittany Yoisten responded with a power-play goal for the Cougars (4-15-2) at the 13:54 mark to tie the game at one.
With 6:47 remaining in the third period, Alexander scored her second game-winner in as many days on a one-two pass from Taggart and O'Neil. Taggart found O'Neil on the right post grabbing the attention of the Chatham goalie before a quick pass to an open Alexander for an easy put away.
A penalty on Stevenson with 1:41 left in the third period gave Chatham a 6-on-4 as they pulled their goalie for an extra skater. However, the Mustangs defense was able to clear the puck the length of the ice to run the clock out for the team's eighth win.
Sophomore Mackenzie Bruch, who totaled 24 saves, picked up her second win of the season and first since the season-opener on Nov. 2, 2013. Megan Buchanan finished with 23 saves for the Cougars.
Stevenson wraps-up the season with a two-game home series versus the University of New England beginning on Friday, February 14. Face-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
