Mustangs Fall to Wittenberg in Championship Game

SPRINGFIELD, Oh. - The Stevenson women's basketball team competed in the Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Tournamen Championship game Monday evening against Wittenberg in the Pam Evans Smith Arena. The Mustangs fell to the Tigers 74-56.

  • The Mustangs (3-7, 0-3 MAC Commonwealth) start off slow, falling in a 2-17 run against Wittenberg (8-4) in the first seven minutes of play.
  • At the 3:13 mark and 2:54 mark, two Kellie Johnson three's puts the Mustangs within nine of the Tigers, 17-8.
  • With 1:34 left in the opening quarter, a Nora Hopkins jumpshot brought the Tigers up 11 points.
  • The Mustangs ended the quarter with the final five points, capping the quarter was a Hannah Crist layup with five seconds left to play.

  • After a 8-8 run in the first three minutes of the second quarter, Crist nets a three for the Mustangs at the 6:45 mark to bring Stevenson within eight, 23-31.
  • Following two Maleah Smith free throws, the Mustangs got the score down by seven points, but came no closer.
  • The final two minutes of the first half, Korynne Berner and Kristie Kalis post two baskets for the Tigers at the 1:03 mark and 0:33 mark, respectively.

  • Brandi Hall began the second half by placing a basket in the net 46 seconds into the half to make the game 27-43.
  • Johnson tallied a layup for the Mustangs at the 8:34 mark.
  • At the 5:57 mark, Stevenson held a 12-6 run over the Tigers capped by two Kirstin Huggins free throws at the 2:07 mark.

  • A block by Olivia Coleman later leads to a layup posted by Coleman at the 8:29 mark to bring the game 46-62.
  • Morgan Pennick drops two free throws in for the Mustangs at the 3:28 mark.
  • Stevenson held the Tigers in a 6-4 run in the final four minutes of play but were unable to hold off Wittenberg to a final score of 56-74.

  • Stevenson shot 37.7% but was unable to hold off the hosts as they shot 52.5%.
  • The Mustangs went 3-16 behind the arc while the Tigers went 2-9. 
  • Stevenson took 30 trips to the free throw line and finished 76.5%.
  • Hall collected 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. 
  • Johnson tallied 12 points and seven rebounds and also collecting two three's for the Mustangs.
  • Brynne Deluzio and Crist each posted five points against the Tigers.
  • Hall, Crist, and Johnson each registered one steal.


  • The Mustangs travel to Albright on Saturday, January 4 for a 1 p.m. MAC Commonwealth match-up at the George C. Bollman Center.
  • Stevenson will host Goucher on Monday, January 6 for a 6 p.m. contest in the Owings Mills Gymnasium.
