Crist Career-High 23 Leads Mustangs in Tournament Win

SPRINGFIELD, Oh. - The Stevenson women's basketball team opened the Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Tournament on Sunday afternoon against Westminster (Mo.) in the Pam Evans Smith Arena. The Mustangs came off a six game losing streak to bring home a 83-64 win over the Blue Jays. Senior Hannah Crist gave the Mustangs a push with a career-high 23 points.

  • Westminster (Mo.) (3-6) began the contest with an 11-0 run against Stevenson (3-6, 0-3 MAC Commonwealth) in the first four and half minutes.
  • At the 5:33 mark, Brandi Hall put two points on the board for the Mustangs, followed by a Savana Herndon layup at the 5:17 mark.
  • With 3:35 left in the first quarter, two Herndon free throws brings the Mustangs within five, 15-10.
  • Rei Imamura posted a three for the Blue Jays at the 1:09 mark, Alexa Sanmartin came around 25 seconds later to post a three for the Mustangs.
  • Freshman Morgan Pennick posted a basket capping the first quarter with just four seconds left. 

  • At the 9:15 mark, Kellie Johnson ties the game with a layup, 20-20.
  • 17 seconds later, Johnson follows up with a three to give Stevenson its first lead of the game, 23-20.
  • At the 4:03 mark, an Abbie Reese layup ties the game, 28-28, then makes a lead change off a free throw to lead the game by one, 29-28.
  • 52 seconds later, Crist tallied another three for the Mustangs to lead 31-29.
  • In the final two and half minutes of the first half, the Mustangs held an 8-3 run to lead by nine points, 41-32, capping the half was a Hall layup.

  • At the 6:52 mark, Johnson posted her second three of the game to give Stevenson a 10 point lead, 46-36.
  • Stevenson posted the next six points, leading the game by eight.
  • At the 1:39 mark, Brynne Deluzio posted two free throws for the Mustangs to hold 16 points over the Blue Jays, 59-43.
  • With 44 seconds left in the third quarter, Reese Arnold finishes with a layup to bring the Blue Jays within 12 of the Mustangs.

  • The Mustangs held the Blue Jays scoreless the first two and half minutes of the final quarter and built a 63-48 lead.
  • Crist tallied her third three of the game to give Stevenson a 20 point lead at the 7:35 mark.
  • With five minutes left to play, Laila Abdul-Rahman posted a layup for the Mustangs off a rebound.
  • Westminster (Mo.) got the lead down to 16 three times but came no closer, Keyanna Andrews capped the game with 27 seconds left with a jumper to make the game 83-64.

  • Stevenson shot 42.7% overall but was 8-30 behind the arc.
  • The Blue Jays tooks 23 more trips to the free throw line and was 22-31 while the Mustangs went 11-19.
  • Stevenson outrebounded the Blue Jays 47-41.
  • The Mustangs overcame 18 turnovers.
  • Crist collected a career-high 23 points for the Mustangs after tallying four shots behind the arc.
  • Johnson finished with 16 points, one shy of her career-high, Johnson and Coleman each tallied seven rebounds.
  • Hall and Abdul-Rahman each finished with eight points for Stevenson.

  • The Mustangs will play in the second day of the Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Tournament on Monday, December 30 at 4:30 p.m. againt Wittenberg in the Pam Evans Smith Arena.
  • Stevenson will host Goucher on Monday, January 6 at the Owings Mills Gymnasium for a 6 p.m. contest.
