Mustangs Hang Tough in Loss Against No. 17 Messiah

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - The Stevenson University women's basketball team traveled to Messiah College Wednesday night for its first MAC Commonwealth match-up of the 2019-20 season falling 59-53. The Mustangs continued momentum throughout the game, holding the lead in the second quarter for 3:57. Kellie Johnson hit double-doubles for the first time of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. 

  • Messiah (6-1) opens the first quarter by putting four points on the board in the first two and half minutes.
  • The Mustangs (2-4) got its first field goal nearly two minutes into the game, Olivia Coleman put one in the net one minute and 46 seconds into the game.
  • A Kellie Johnson basket tied the game 6-6 at the 5:12 mark.
  • With 32 seconds remaining in the quarter, Hannah Crist puts a three on the board to bring the Mustangs within one, 11-12. 

  • Two Eleana Eckley free throws advances the Falcons 14-11.
  • A Brandi Hall three ties the game, 14-14, at the 8:33 mark.
  • Hall continues momentum with a layup for the Mustangs, following a Coleman steal.
  • Johnson adds a layup for Stevenson at the 5:46 mark.
  • Leah Springer was able to put two free throws for Messiah,18-16, at the 5:24 mark.
  • The Mustangs extended their run to 12-4 while Coleman made it a 13-16 game with 3:57 to go.
  • The Falcons ended the half with a nine point spurt, with 30 seconds left on the quarter, Spring put up a layup and a basket giving the Falcons a 25-23 lead.

  • Following a four point Messiah lead, Brynne Deluzio puts two free throws on the board for the Mustangs.
  • A Hall basket changes the tide, 33-32, at the 5:13 mark.
  • Sidney Stutzman and Jayneisha Davis each dish out two threes for the Falcons on the board, pulling in a five point lead.
  • Pennick jumped the score within five with a basket for the Mustangs with 1:23 left in the quarter.
  • With 34 seconds left, Deluzio places in a free throw for Stevenson, advancing 36-40 before the final quarter.

  • A lead change at the 7:32 mark by a three from Johnson lifts the Mustangs 44-42.
  • Davis ties the game four a half minutes into the quarter, a layup by Springer changes the lead at the 5:47 mark, followed by another tied game by Johnson.
  • Pennick cut the lead to three with a basket at the 4:22 mark.
  • Messiah lead a 4-2 run, Pennick pushed to get a three for Stevenson making the game 53-55 with 1:43 remaining.
  • With one minute remaining in the game and the Mustangs trailing by just two points, Stevenson was unable to hold off the Falcons final five points to end the game, 53-59.

  • Stevenson shot 39.3% while the hosts shot 38.7%.
  • The Mustangs grabbed 40 rebounds and the Falcons grabbed 33.
  • The match-up featured 16 lead changes, and 10 ties.
  • Pennick tallied 12 points, five assists, and four rebounds. 
  • Johnson shot 2-3 on three's while teammate Pennick shot 2-5. 
  • The Mustangs registered seven steals, Johnson with three and Coleman with two.

  • Stevenson hosts Lycoming in a 1 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game on Saturday, December 7 at the Owings Mills Gymnasium.
