No. 21 DePauw Uses Big Third to Take Down Mustangs in Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Stevenson women's basketball team was tied with nationally-ranked DePauw University (Ind.) at 16-16 after one, but the Tigers outscored the Mustangs 24-7 in the third en route to defeating the Mustangs by a final of 76-52 on day two of the Daytona Beach Shootout on Friday afternoon at the Ocean Center. 

  • Stevenson got out to an early 4-3 lead thanks to a pair of baskets from Laila Abdul-Rahman with 7:21 to play.  
  • DePauw snagged their first advantage of the afternoon at 7-4 after two layups by Hayley Cange at the 3:54 mark.
  • Another Cange bucket matched the Tigers largest lead of the frame at four 12-8 with 3:46 remaining.
  • A triple by Hannah Crist off a feed from Brandi Hall cut it to one and sparked an 8-4 push by the Mustangs capped by a three by Kellie Johnson knotting things at 16-16 after one.

  • DePauw began the second strong going on a 7-0 run over 1:37 finished off by a Sydney Kopp three to go ahead 23-16.  
  • Stevenson trimmed the margin to three on back-to-back possessions with jumpers from Abdul-Rahman and Hall making it 23-20 with 7:39 in the half.
  • A pair of Cange foul shots at the 4:11 mark extended the advantage back out to five 28-23, but was quickly answered in a 43-second span by two at the line for Campbell and a three from Crist to make it 28-28.
  • The Tigers closed the half on a 9-3 push with three different players knocking down three-point shots to grab a 37-31 lead at the break. 

  • Campbell hit two free throws wrapped up a 7-2 Stevenson gallop to begin the third and cut the DePauw edge to just one at 39-38 just 2:13 in.
  • Kopp stopped the Mustangs push with a three-pointer and sent the Tigers to a 22-0 run to end the quarter giving them a 61-38 lead after three.

  • DePauw continued their strong play when Maya Howard knocked down a three with 6:45 remaining to finish off a 9-2 push to start the period to push the lead to 70-40 which was only broken up by a Campbell jumper.
  • Alexa Sanmartin knocked down two threes while Campbell added a triple and a free throw with Abdul-Rahman burying a jumper to account for the rest of the Mustangs scoring as the final buzzer sounded with the 76-52 final.

  • Stevenson was 18-51 (35.3%) from the floor, while DePauw went 28-63 (44.4%).
  • Both sides shot pretty well from distance as the Mustangs were 8-18 (44.4%) with the Tigers going 9-17 (52.9%).
  • DePauw controlled the glass outrebounding Stevenson 49-23 including 20-6 on the offensive boards.
  • Campbell led the way for the Mustangs with 14 points going 5-6 at the foul line and pulled down 4 rebounds.
  • Crist finished with 12 knocking 4-5 from long range and dished out two helpers.
  • Abdul-Rahman also was in double-digits scoring a career-high 10 and grabbing two boards.
  • Claire Keefe led DePauw and all scorers posting a double-double netting a game-high 20 and hauling in 10 rebounds.

  • Stevenson returns to action in the new year on Thursday, January 3 when they travel to Reading, Pa. to square off with the Alvernia University Golden Wolves in MAC Commonwealth play at 8pm.
  • The Mustangs come back home on Monday, January 7 as they host Stockton in non-conference action at 7pm.
