Big Third Quarter Pushes Mustangs to Second Straight Win

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Stevenson University women's basketball team outscored North Carolina Wesleyan 24-9 in the third quarter and placed five in double figures as the Mustangs downed the Battling Bishops 83-67 in day two of the Jean Edge Classic at Everett Gym Sunday afternoon.

  • Stevenson (2-2) took an early 12-6 lead with 6:20 on the clock following a conventional three-point play by Hannah Crist.
  • N.C. Wesleyan (1-2) tied the game 16-16 with 47 seconds left on a basket by Daijah Davis.
  • A Crist three three seconds before the end of the quarter put the Mustangs on top 21-18.

  • The Battling Bishops took a 26-25 lead just over two minutes into the frame on a three by Keorra Taylor.
  • Stevenson responded with a Brandi Hall three 6:55 before intermission to retake the lead, 28-26.
  • The game was tied four times before a three-point play by Jonyae Curry with 3:08 to go put the Mustangs up[ 35-34.
  • Stevenson and North Carolina Wesleyan traded the lead six more times, with a layup by Yasmeen Nelson with three seconds remaining putting the Mustangs up 41-40 at the break.

  • The guests opened the second half with 10 straight points to take a 51-40 lead on a basket by Denia Campbell two minutes in.
  • A jumper by Alexa Sanmartin at the 5:27 mark extended the Mustang lead to 14, 57-43.
  • Back-to-back Sanmartin threes, the second with 1:44 remaining in the period, upped Stevenson's lead to 63-47.
  • The Mustangs took a 65-49 lead into the final frame.
  • Stevenson shot 69% in the quarter (11-16) while holding the Battling Bishops to 24% (4-17) from the floor.

  • North Carolina Wesleyan pulled within 11, 66-55, with 7:11 to go on a Kayla Johnson layup.
  • Another Sanmartin trifecta, this one with 4:47 on the clock, made it a 72-57 game.
  • Cydney Nichols' three with 4:04 left put the hosts within 10, 72-62, before the Mustangs scored the next six points, and a pair of Campbell free throws with 2:16 to go increased the lead to 16, 78-62.

  • Sanmartin finished with a career-best 15 points on 5-8 shooting, including 3-4 behind the arc.
