ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Stevenson University men's cross country team earned a pair of first place votes and was picked to finish second out of 17 schools at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship Saturday as the league released its pre-championship coaches poll Tuesday. The Mustangs garnered a total of 225 points.
The 2017 MAC Cross Country Championships are being hosted by Delaware Valley University on Saturday. The men's 8K race is set for a 11:00 am start.
Messiah garnered 13 first place votes and compiled 249 points as the pre-championship favorite. DeSales (211) and Eastern (203) were picked third and fourth, with Misericordia and Widener tying for fifth with 199 points. The Pride picked up the poll's other first place vote.
Stevenson has been regionally ranked all season in the USTFCCCA regional rankings and moved up to a season-best eighth in last week's ranking. The Mustangs have been in competition five times this season, placing fourth out of 12 schools in their most recent outing at the Pomona-Pitzer Cross Country Invite in Claremont, California on October 14.
The Mustangs have been paced all season by junior Langston Gash. Gash has been Stevenson's top runner all season, running a program-record 8K time of 25:11 at the Paul Short Invitational on September 29. He also took sixth at the Pomona-Pitzer meet and was named MAC Runner of the Week after placing second among non-Division I athletes at the John Paddy Doyle Meet of Champions on September 15.
The Mustangs placed fifth in last year's MAC Championship, their highest-ever finish.
