Mustangs Reach New Program High With No. 3 Ranking

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Stevenson University men's volleyball team after spending the last five weeks ranked sixth set a new program record with their No. 3 ranking in the newest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) DIII Top 15 poll as announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon.

The Mustangs who sit at 27-3 overall and 11-1 in MAC play, also received two first-place votes joining Carthage and Springfield in that category.  Stevenson remains ranked for the twelfth consecutive week in the AVCA Top 15.

The team is coming off a 3-0 week, that saw them bring down conference foes Messiah College and Widener University in addition to beating York College (N.Y.) all in three sets.  First, on Wednesday, the Mustangs defeated the Falcons in MAC action by set scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-17.  Junior Kyle Bosko led the team with ten kills, sophomores Nate Reynolds and Logan Smiley combined to put away 14 kills.  Upperclassmen senior Landon Shorts added seven kills and five digs, while graduate student Christian Taylor handed out a match-high 31 assists.  Then Saturday, they dispatched of another conference foe in Widener by scores of 25-13, 25-16, and 25-16.  The youth of the Mustangs was on display in the match with sophomore Garrett Weigel and freshman Tyler Aiello each burying six kills with fellow rookie Tanner Stauffer adding five and four aces.  Senior Billy Russo chipped in five kills.  Sophomore Aleks Melbardis had a team-high 24 assists.  In the nightcap they knocked off non-conference York (N.Y.) with scores of 25-14, 25-11, and 25-16.  Weigel continued his strong afternoon with ten kills and six aces.  Junior Nathan Bosse, along with Bosko, Stauffer, and Aiello each racked up four kills.  Melbardis dished out 27 more assists.  In both of the matches on Saturday the Mustangs never trailed at any point throughout the day.

Stevenson returns to action tomorrow, April 3 when they host the Alvernia University Golden Wolves in Middle Atlantic Conference action at 7pm at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  They will then wrap-up the 2019 regular season with a home match with the Eagles of Eastern University with first serve set for 7pm.
