INDIANAPOLIS, IN. - The Stevenson men's volleyball team who is ranked sixth for the fifth consecutive week in American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) DIII Top 15 poll received some higher praise from the NCAA on Friday morning when the organization put the Mustangs No. 1 in the first set of the West Region rankings.
Stevenson (25-3, 10-1 MAC), is currently riding the longest winning streak in the nation at 13 and have been ranked in the AVCA for 11 weeks running.
Against other teams that appear in the NCAA rankings the Mustangs are 5-2 with wins coming against No. 3 Endicott (East), No. 4 Rivier (East), No. 4 Benedictine (West), No. 6 Arcadia (West), and No. 8 North Central (West), with defeats to No. 2 Stevens (East) and No. 6 Arcadia (West).
The team has been led by senior Landon Shorts who has totaled 307 kills and 67 service aces. He also ranks eighth nationally averaging .684 aces per set. Classmate Jason Gardner has been big as well with 155 kills, 101 digs, and 46 blocks. A pair of sophomores Logan Smiley and Nate Reynolds have added to the Mustangs attack combining for 366 kills, 166 blocks, and 123 digs. Reynolds is second nationally in blocks per set with 1.314, totaling 119 so far on the year. The addition of graduate student Christian Taylor has benefitted everyone on the team as he has racked up 795 assists to average 8.83 per set.
Stevenson as a team leads the country in blocks per set with 2.49 and sit tenth in opponent hitting percentage holding them to a .127.
The Mustangs return to action tomorrow, March 30 when they travel to Chester, Pennsylvania for a tri-match hosted by Widener University. Stevenson will face the host Pride in a MAC contest at 12pm, before squaring off with York College (N.Y.) at 2pm.
