No. 6 Mustangs Run Win Streak To Six In Win Over Randolph-Macon

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The sixth-ranked men's volleyball team never trailed en route to winning their sixth consecutive match downing the visiting Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets by a final of 3-0 on Friday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium in non-conference action.  Set scores were 25-14, 25-16, and 25-16.

  • Stevenson (18-3) opened up an 8-2 lead early on kills by senior Jason Gardner and sophomores Nate Reynolds and Logan Smiley along with some help from senior Landon Shorts who posted two aces during that stretch.
  • Randolph-Macon (8-10) scored three of the next five off one error each by Gardner and Smiley coupled with a kill for Lenny Sampson Jr. made it 10-5.
  • The Mustangs then reeled off five in a row with senior Billy Russo posting two aces and Shorts recording a kill extending the lead to 15-5.    
  • A solo block for Lee Olenyik pulled the Yellow Jackets to within 18-11.
  • However, the hosts got scores from junior Kyle BoskoSmiley, Shorts, and Reynolds to outscore the guests 7-3 over the next ten points to take the first 25-14.
  • Stevenson hit .263 to the visitors .000.

  • During a 5-2 run to start the second, the hosts posted a pair of assisted blocks one by Shorts and Reynolds followed by one from Gardner and junior Nathan Bosse.  
  • Randolph-Macon responded with a 5-2 run of their own featuring kills for Corban Jungers and Scotty Carter to knot the score at 7-7.
  • With things, level 8-8 a kill off the arm of Reynolds sent the Mustangs on a 7-1 gallop with Gardner and Shorts aiding in the attack to open a six-point cushion 15-9.
  • The Yellow Jackets trimmed the deficit to four 17-13, on an assisted block between Jungers and Dayne Iverson.
  • Kills for Bosse, Shorts, and Smiley along with aces off the hands of Russo and sophomore Garrett Weigel capped off an 8-3 push bringing the second to an end 25-16. 
  • The home side held the visitors to a -.087 while posting a .235 of their own.

  • Stevenson began the frame strong taking a 7-4 lead on scores by Smiley, Weigel, and Bosko.
  • A service error for Shorts brought the guests to within 9-7, but a Weigel kill and four straight Randolph-Macon attack errors stretched the edge to 14-7.
  • After a miscue by Smiley, two more Yellow Jackets mishits bumped the advantage to 17-9.
  • The guests would not go quietly though as a block by Olenyik capped a 3-0 run trimming the margin to five 17-12.
  • That was the closest the Mustangs let them get with kills for Shorts, Weigel, Russo, and Bosko aided by two visiting attack errors wrapped up the set and match 25-16. 

  • In non-conference play, the Mustangs have posted an impressive 12-1.
  • Stevenson for the match hit .215 while holding Randolph-Macon to a -.047.
  • The Mustangs were dominating on the service line posting a 12-0 advantage in aces.
  • It was the third time this season they have recorded double-digits in aces.
  • Smiley led the team with seven kills, two aces, one dig, and one block.
  • Weigel posted five kills, an ace, and a dig.
  • Russo totaled four aces on the night, while Shorts and Gardner each finished with two.
  • Graduate student Christian Taylor handed out a match-high 19 assists.
  • Olenyik had seven kills to pace the visitors.

  • The Mustangs are right back in action tomorrow, March 16 as they face conference-leading Arcadia University and Misericordia University in a MAC tri-match hosted by Arcadia in Glenside, Pennsylvania.  Stevenson will battle No. 13 Arcadia at 1pm, before facing the Cougars at 3pm.
  • They will return home on Wednesday, April 3 when Alvernia University visits Owings Mills Gymnasium for a conference tilt at 7pm.
