GENEVA, Ohio - Stevenson University men's track and field junior Patrick Watson used a late kick to finish second in his 3000-meter steeplechase heat at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship at SPIRE Institute to qualify for Saturday's final. Watson finished with a time of 9:13.70, good for fifth overall.
Watson led the event early, but was moved to midpack heading into the final lap. The junior who earlier this year was an All-American in cross country used a late kick over the final 400 meters to place second in the heat, just 0.32 seconds behind heat winner Daniel Rosen of Pomona-Pitzer. The top five in each 10-person heat, plus the next four fastest times, qualified for the final.
Saturday's final is set for an 11:45 am start and can be seen live on NCAA.com.
