Mustangs Seek Successful NCAA Debut Against Clarks Summit


OWINGS MILLS, Md. - After winning the MAC Commonwealth championship and earning its first-ever NCAA berth, the Stevenson University men's tennis team travels to Middlebury, Vermont to face Colonial States Athletic Conference champion Clarks Summit in an NCAA First Round match on Thursday, May 9 at 9 pm.  Live updates and video on select courts will be available.

  • Stevenson (16-2) defeated Messiah 5-1 Saturday to win its first-ever MAC Commonwealth title.  The Mustangs took two of three doubles matches then won the first three completed singles tilts.
  • The Mustangs are on a three-match win streak.
  • Ray McDermott is 9-4 at No. 1 singles, while Andre Sturniolo has gone 10-3 at No. 2.
  • Sturniolo was named the MVP of the MAC Commonwealth Championship.
  • Stevenson is 80-21 in dual match singles action this season.
  • In doubles, Drew Ryan and McDermott have gone 11-4 at No. 1.  Sturniolo and Douglas Vaughan are 14-2.
  • Vaughan had the clinching point at No. 4 singles in Saturday's win.

  • Clarks Summit (11-2) is also making its first-ever NCAA appearance.
  • The Defenders downed Bryn Athyn 5-3 in the CSAC conference final after sweeping Rosemont in the semifinals.
  • Evan Michel is 10-2 at No. 1 singles, while Noah Macey is 10-0 at No. 2 singles.
  • Macey and Eric Griffen are 10-0 at No. 1 doubles.

  • Stevenson and Clarks Summit have never met in men's tennis.

  • Thursday's winner will advance to the second round where either the Mustangs or Defenders will face No. 31 MIT on Friday.
