ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Stevenson men's tennis team opened up MAC Commonwealth play with a 5-4 victory over host Lebanon Valley. The win improves the Mustangs' record to 8-0 on the season.
The Mustangs took control of the match early by taking all three of the doubles matches.
Juniors Ray McDermott and Drew Ryan won their third-straight match as a duo in a dominant 8-1 triumph. In No. 2, senior Douglas Vaughan and junior Andre Sturniolo won their fifth straight and improved to 9-1 on the year after taking their match by an 8-4 margin. Senior Wornden Ly and sophomore Richie Abruscato picked up an 8-5 win in No. 3, moving them to 4-0 as a team this season.
Stevenson clinched the victory after taking the No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches. McDermott cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 straight-set victory in No. 1, improving his record to 5-4. In No. 3, Ryan picked up his fifth-straight win in a 6-3, 6-2 triumph.
Sturniolo dropped a tiebreak in the first set before falling in his No. 2 match, while Vaughan suffered a 6-3, 6-3 setback in No. 4.
Ly and freshman Larry Johnson III fell in their No. 5 and No. 6 matches in straight sets. Ly fell to 3-3 on the season, while Johnson's record dropped to 7-2.
The Mustangs will look to remain undefeated when they take on Lycoming in a home match on Saturday, April 6. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
