WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Senior Peter Appiah Jr. and freshman Lukas Sanidas took down Wilkes by an 8-3 score in the No. 4 doubles finals to win the program's first Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Tennis Championship. Appiah and Sanidas' road to the championship started with an 8-5 victory over Lebanon Valley in the quarterfinals, followed by a dominating 8-1 win over Arcadia in the semifinal.
Junior Andre Sturniolo and junior Douglas Vaughan advanced to the No. 2 doubles finals, but would fall in heartbreaking match to second-seeded Wilkes by an 8-7 score. Vaughan and Sturniolo defeated Eastern 8-5 in the quarterfinals before their 8-6 triumph over Lebanon Valley in the semi's.
Sturniolo dominated in his opening round match in No. 2 singles, taking down Felix Mahon of Lycoming by a 6-0, 6-1 score. Junior Drew Ryan advanced to the quarterfinals with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-1 victory in No. 3.
Freshman Larry Johnson III, who had a bye in the first round of No. 6 singles, cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory to advance to the semifinals.
Vaughan and senior Ly and had byes in their opening round matches.
McDermott dropped his No. 1 singles match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 to Tyler Milan of King's.
The second and final day of the tournament will commence on Sunday, October 14 at 9 a.m.
