Brown Totals 11 Saves, Mustangs Fall on Road at Alvernia

READING, Pa. - Alvernia scored three second half goals, including two in the final eight minutes, as the Stevenson men's soccer team was eliminated from MAC Commonwealth playoff contention with a 3-0 loss Wednesday evening.

The Mustangs (3-11-2, 2-5 MAC Commonwealth) were paced by senior Jake Brown who finished with 11 saves, marking the third time he has totaled double digit saves this season.

Just 52 seconds into the game, freshman Jay Smith fired a shot but it went wide. Stevenson also recorded the games first corner kick in the third minute but the kick by junior Iliyas Mirza was cleared away.

The hosts had its first scoring opportunity in the eighth minute as Damien Jennings headed down a bouncing ball and fired a shot out of the air off the post. The Golden Wolves (9-8-1 4-4 MAC Commonwealth) hit the post a second time as Gabe Hochenberger's header following the hosts first corner dinged off the near post.

In the 25th minute Adam Orndorff got free at the top of the box and fired a shot by it was right to Brown, who recorded seven saves in the opening half.

Stevenson was able to get back on the offensive as a long free kick by sophomore Nick Ellis earned the Mustangs their second corner kick. On the corner, Mirza connect with freshman Tariq Lee in the middle of the box but the header by Lee was saved by Zach Rider.

Brown came up big for the visitors in the final seven minutes of the opening half, making four saves. In the 39th minute, Brown made a point blank save on a close shot before making back-to-back saves on shots off of corner kicks.

The beginning of the second half was much like the first for Brown as he kept the Mustangs in the game with big saves. In the 53rd minute, Raine Slovak was wide open at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot but Brown punched it over the net.

Smith had a chance for Stevenson five minutes later as he tried to head it past Rider but he did not get enough pace on the ball and Rider was able to recover and punch the ball away.

Alvernia broke through on the score sheet in the 60th minute as Metuge Esong kept the ball in play and fired a cross on the end line that deflected off a Mustang defender and into the net. Esong also had a hand in the Golden Wolves other two goals, recording a goal and an assist.

Brown added another save to his night with a second point blank save in the 70th minute as Alvernia got behind the Mustangs defense and fired a shot inside the six-yard box.

The Golden Wolves added goals in the 83rd and 85th minutes to get a berth into the MAC playoffs.

Alvernia outshot the Mustangs, 20-5 and held a 9-6 advantage in corner kick.

Stevenson concludes the 2017 season on Saturday, October 28 when the Mustangs travel to No. 3 Messiah beginning at 7:30 p.m.
