OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Three Stevenson University men's lacrosse alums will square off on Sunday in the inaugural weekend of the Premier Lacrosse League at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.
Mike Simon '09 and Callum Robinson '15, members of Atlas FC, will face Redwoods LC and Brent Hiken '15 at 2 pm on a game that can be seen on NBC Sports Network. The first two games in league history will take place on Saturday, with Archers LC and Chrome LC meeting at 1pm and Whipsnakes LC and Chaos LC meeting at 4 pm.
The PLL is a six-team, tour-based league featuring 160 of the best lacrosse players in the world. The teams that will take the field for the league's first season are Archers LC, Atlas LC, Chaos LC, Chrome LC, Redwoods LC and Whipsnakes LC. The PLL a total of 14 cities in its inaugural season, including a stop in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins' Homewood Field on June 22-23.
The league also announced on Wednesday that its Face Off Athlete of the Year Award will be named after Mustang head coach Paul Cantabene.
Always known as one of the most intense and hardest working lacrosse players, Cantabene, who recently wrapped up his 15th season at Stevenson, was an All-American during his time at Loyola and a perennial All-Star in both the indoor and outdoor professional game. Nationally known for his durability, toughness and unrelenting will to win, Cantabene remains one of the best lacrosse players of all time. Annually, the Paul Cantabene Face Off Athlete of the Year Award will be given to the best face off athlete in the Premier Lacrosse League.
