OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Sophomore JT Thelen scored five goals and dished out three assists as No. 14 Stevenson picked up their seventh consecutive victory, defeating Albright 18-8 on Senior Night in MAC Commonwealth men's lacrosse Tuesday night at Mustang Stadium.
The win over Albright (6-6, 4-2 MAC Commonwealth) snapped the Lions three game win streak, while also extending Stevenson's (10-3, 7-0) MAC Commonwealth record to 39-0 since joining the conference in 2013.
Seven total Mustangs scored on the evening. In addition to Thelen's goals, six seniors scored on the night. Tyler Fuhrman, Kyle D'Onofrio and Wade Korvin had hat tricks, while junior Kyle Karsian had a pair of goals. Seniors Morgan Pritchett and Sean Ohlhaver each had single goals. Ohlhaver also had a game-high three caused turnovers from his midfield position while freshman Justin Burnette dominated at the faceoff x, winning 22 of 24 faceoffs.
Senior Cam Cetrone had a hat-trick on the night including three assists against the Mustangs. Teammate Andrew Potter scored a pair of goals himself while seniors Derek Stump, Tyler Strayline and junior Nick Tonno all scored a goal. Junior goalie Ryan Aler faced a fierce Mustang offense as he recorded 16 saves on the night.
Stevenson needed just 48 seconds to score as Thelen's first shot of the game got past Aler to put the Mustangs up 1-0. A goal by Korvin at the 11:51 mark would give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead. Thelen would then score back-to-back goals to extend the host's lead to 4-0 at the 5:29 mark.
Albright would begin the second period with their first goal of the game by Tonno, to make it 4-1. Before the Lions could continue their offensive attack, Stevenson would take advantage of a man-up opportunity as Korvin scored with an assist from Thelen putting the Mustangs lead back to four. Albright answered the Mustangs goal with a point of their own, making it 5-2. Stevenson would score three straight goals putting the Mustangs up 8-2. Albright would end the first half with a goal by Potter as Stevenson entered halftime with a 8-3 lead.
The Lions would continue their scoring coming out of intermission as Potter would find the back of the net with a consecutive goal at the 12:48 mark, cutting the Mustangs lead back to four. Fuhrman would open the scoring for the Mustangs in the second half with his first goal of the night, followed by a goal by Ohlhaver to put Stevenson up 10-4. Albright continued stay in the game with a goal by Strayline. Fuhrman would score a goal to put the Mustangs up by six, as Albright would score back-to-back goals to continue to claw at the host's lead. Stevenson would stop the Albright surge with a goal by Thelen to end the quarter, taking a 12-7 lead into the final frame.
In the fourth, the Mustangs would continue their scoring with a goal by D'Onofrio, making it 13-7. Stevenson put the game away by scoring the game's final five goals.
Stevenson outshot Albright 64-26 on the evening while also winning 26 of 29 at the faceoff x. Senior goalie Ross Dinan had four saves on the night as he played the full 60 minutes. Stevenson was 4-7 on extra-man opportunities while the hosts scooped up 60 groundballs to the Lions' 31. Albright had 26 turnovers as Stevenson turned it over 19 times.
Prior to the game, the Stevenson men's lacrosse program honored 14 seniors playing in their final regular season home game in a Mustang uniform.
Stevenson begins a three game road trip on Friday, April 21 to end the regular season, as the Mustangs travel to No. 11 Cabrini for a big non-league tilt. Faceoff is slated for 7:00 pm.
