Benitez Nets Hat Trick as 12th-Ranked Mustangs Roll Past Chatham

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - The 12th-ranked Stevenson men's ice hockey team netted a program record nine goals, including a hat trick by sophomore Luke Benitez, as the Mustangs posted their eighth straight victory with a 9-3 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) win over Chatham Saturday afternoon at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • Senior Chris Javens started the scoring at the 4:47 mark after sending a slap shot from the point to the top left corner and over the stick side of Ricardo Gonzalez.
  • Javens was assisted by sophomore Chad Watt, who fed the puck up from behind the net, and freshman Chris Lee.
  • Lee and junior Carl Lyden netted goals just 2:39 apart to push the Mustangs (10-1-0, 7-1-0 UCHC) lead the 3-0.
  • On the second goal, Benitez controlled the puck behind the net before feeding it to Lee who was right on the doorstep for an easy tap in. Senior Bruce Stachitas had the secondary assist.
  • Lyden scored after redirecting a shot from senior Christian Ripley with classmate Dominic Brenza also recording assist.

  • Benitez started the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 5:38 of the period after taking the puck that was played behind by a Chatham skater and scoring on a low angle shot.
  • It is the just sixth unassisted goal by the Mustangs on their 55 this season.
  • Junior Houston Wilson and Watt both got on the scoring column, lighting the lamp just 39 seconds apart.
  • Stachitas fed the puck down low to Brenza who found Wilson right in front of the net.
  • Watt scored from near top of the right face-off circle after Lee played the puck ahead through the neutral zone to Wilson before finding Watt.
  • The Cougars (2-11-0, 1-7-0 UCHC) got on the board at the midway point of the period, scoring twice in a 1:41 span, including a power play goal.
  • Benitez responded with 6:36 left in the period, tipping in a shot by junior Matt Cappucci. Watt picked up the secondary assist after touch passing it to Cappucci on a pass from Lee.

  • Ripley picked up his second point of the day, scoring just 3:37 into the period after forcing a turnover in the neutral zone and executing a give-and-go with Lyden.
  • Noah Medalsy scored a four-on-four goal for Chatham at the 11:21 mark before Benitez completed his hat trick with a power play goal 3:25 later.
  • Watt found Benitez on a two-on-one while senior Evan Williams was credited for the second assist.

  • In addition to goals, Stevenson also finished with a program record 53 shots, 24 points, and 15 assists.
  • It is the fifth hat trick in program history as Benitez also dished out an assist.
  • Watt finished with one goal and three assists while Lee has one goal and two assists.
  • Stachitas and Brenza each dished out two assists, the 13th and 14th assists of the season for Brenza. He is just three shy of tying the single season record.
  • Meanwhile, Lyden finished with one goal and one assist.
  • In net, freshman Ryan Kenny stopped 14 shots before senior Dustyn Moyer made nine in the third period.
  • The Mustangs finished 2-for-9 on the power play while Chatham was 1-for-3.
  • Stevenson won 54 of the 75 face-offs, including 22 by Brenza and 12 by Wilson.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, January 10 when the Mustangs host a non-conference game versus third-ranked Geneseo beginning at 7:00 p.m.
