Mustangs Defeat 2018 National Champion, St. Norbert, 6-5

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - The Stevenson men's ice hockey team netted four goals in the third period and erased a pair of deficits as the Mustangs posted a 6-5 non-conference victory over the 2018 National Champions, St. Norbert, Friday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • Neither team recorded a shot on net in the opening four minutes until senior Chris Javens fired the first at the 4:04 mark.
  • The Mustangs (6-1-0) earned the game's first power play at the 6:07 mark after a tripping penalty.
  • With 28 seconds remaining in the power play, freshman Chris Lee put the hosts on the board after sophomore Ryan Patrick found him on the back door. Junior Aaron Murray picked up the secondary assist.
  • Just 1:12 later, the Green Knights (2-7-0) got on the board on an even strength goal by Kurt Black before Black gave the visitors a 2-1 lead with 6:06 remaining.
  • St. Norbert pushed its lead to 3-1 with 3:36 remaining in the opening period as Peyton Frantti scored an unassisted goal.
  • The remaining 1:07 of the opening period was bumped to the start of the second period after a panel of glass was shattered.

  • The Mustangs started the period with a 1:30 remaining on the power play but their two shots were stopped by Ryan Bontorin.
  • Stevenson had another power play just one minute after the previous one ended but did not put any shots on net.
  • Sophomore Luke Benitez netted his first goal of the season as his shot from behind the net hit off Bontorin and into the net. Lee and Murray picked up the assists.

  • Just 19 seconds into the period, junior Carl Lyden tied the game at 3-3, as he sent a backhander past Bontorin after his initial redirect off a shot by senior Christian Ripley was saved. Senior Dominic Brenza recorded the secondary assist.
  • Fourty-four seconds after the Mustangs killed off a penalty, Ripley gave the hosts a 4-3 lead after scoring on a breakaway over the glove of Bontorin. Senior Justin Stelzer fed Ripley with a pass through the neutral zone.
  • Just 55 seconds later, the Green Knights tied the game before Black netted a hat trick and gave the visitors a 5-4 at the 5:53 mark.
  • With the Mustangs on a five-on-three power play, Ripley tied the game at the 8:25 mark on assists from Brenza and senior Bruce Stachitas.
  • Lee gave Stevenson the lead with 6:27 after Benitez centered a pass to the rookie who was all alone. Patrick picked up the secondary assist.
  • With 1:37 St. Norbert pulled Bontorin and fired four shots on net that were all saved by freshman Ryan Kenny.
  • The Green Knights were forced to put Bontorin back between the pipes after a hooking call gave the Mustangs a power play and offensive zone face-off.

  • Stevenson held a slight edge in shots, 28-27, while winning 37 of the 70 face-offs.
  • Ripley and Lee both finished with two goals and one assist while Brenza, Murray, and Patrick each dished out two assists.
  • Benitez had one goal and one assist.
  • Patrick has recorded an assist in all seven games this season. His 11 assists already ranked tied for ninth in a single season.
  • Meanwhile, Brenza has six assists in his last three games.
  • Kenny finished with 22 saves and is 4-0-0 as a starter.
  • The Mustangs four-game win streak ties the program set two other times.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, November 30 when the Mustangs host a non-conference contest versus Lawrence beginning at 3:00 p.m.
