Roanoke Grinds Out 54-44 Win

SALEM, Va. - Host Roanoke built a 27-21 halftime lead and never trailed over the final 20 minutes as it downed Stevenson 54-44 in non-conference men's basketball in the opening round of the Cregger Invitational Sunday afternoon.

  • Stevenson (5-6) scored six straight points to go up 6-5 on a Jaylin Johnson layup 4:26 into the contest.
  • The Maroons (6-4) countered with six straight of their own to take an 11-7 lead with just over 14 minutes remaining.
  • Roanoke held the Mustangs without a field goal for over eight minutes and led 19-11 with just under seven minutes left before halftime.
  • The guests scored six straight points and a free throw by Mark Terrell pulled the Mustangs within two, 19-17, with 4:26 on the clock.
  • A basket by Mikey Parker at the 2:32 mark tied the game 21-21.
  • The hosts closed the half on a 6-0 run to take a 27-21 lead into the break.

  • A three by Norman Hughes halved the Roanoke lead on Stevenson's first possession of the second half.
