Panthers Rally Past Mustangs Over Final 20 Minutes

SCRANTON, Pa. - Old Westbury rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to down Stevenson 74-70 in non-conference men's basketball in the consolation round of the Holiday Inn Express Electric City Classic hosted by Marywood at Insalaco Arena Saturday afternoon.

  • The game saw five lead changes in the first seven minutes before a three by Stevenson's (3-3) Norman Hughes put the Mustangs up 17-16 at the 12:54 mark.
  • A three by Cam Harris extended the Mustang advantage to 20-16 with just over 12 minutes left.
  • Back-to-back Hughes triples pushed Stevenson's lead to eight, 26-18, with 10:10 on the clock.
  • Charles Wingate pulled Old Westbury (1-3) within four, 26-22, with his basket at the 9:12 mark.
  • A 7-0 spurt capped by two Jaylin Johnson free throws made it a 33-22 game with just over six minutes left in the frame.
  • Three free throws by Cameron Winston cut Stevenson's lead to eight, 37-29, with just over three minutes to go.
  • Kyle Wooldridge's three with just under a minute remaining gave the Mustangs their largest lead of the first game, 46-33, and they took a 46-34 lead into the locker room.

  • Old Westbury opened the second half on a 13-4 run and cut the lead to three, 50-47 on Winston's layup with 14:23 left in the ballgame.
  • The Panthers got the lead down to two, 52-50, but a Harris trifecta with 11:21 on the clock made it 55-50.
  • Old Westbury reeled off 11 straight points to take a 61-55 lead with 9:22 left.
  • A layup by Mark Terrell with 6:19 to go pulled Stevenson within one, 64-63, capping an 8-3 spurt.
  • Old Westbury reclaimed a six-point cushion, 73-67, with just under three minutes to go on a Pedro Marquez three.
  • Hughes made 1-of-2 at the line to get the lead down to three, 73-70, with 2:08 on the clock.
  • The Panthers came up empty on their next possession and Stevenson got it back with 1:35 remaining.
  • Stevenson came up empty on their final four possessions, including a pair of turnovers.

  • Terrell finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for the second straight game, going 6-7 from the floor and 8-10 at the free throw line.
  • Hughes knocked down four three-pointers and tallied 17 points.
  • Harris was 3-4 behind the arc and posted nine points
  • Johnson recorded seven points, five rebounds and five assists.
  • Stevenson was harmed by 22 turnovers, while the Panthers had 14 giveaways.
  • The Mustangs shot 45.8% overall and were 10-28 behind the arc and 16-20 at the free throw line.
  • Old Westbury shot 43% overall, went 7-23 from three and went 15-24 at the charity stripe.
  • Stevenson held a 33-32 rebounding edge.

  • Stevenson is idle until next Sunday, December 1, traveling to Sarah Lawrence for a 2 pm non-conference tilt.
