Terrell Leads Three in Double Figures, Mustangs Downed by John Jay

SCRANTON, Pa. - The John Jay men's basketball team led nearly wire-to-wire to move past Stevenson 73-63 in the first round of Marywood's Holiday Inn Express Electric City Classic Friday night at Insalaco Arena.

  • John Jay (2-1) started the game on a 7-1 run over the first 2:46 of the contest.
  • A dunk by Stevenson's (3-2) Mark Terrell snapped the Bloodhound run at 16:27.
  • The Bloodhounds held a 15-8 lead following a three with 10:23 to go in the first half.
  • Back-to-back threes by Jaylin Johnson and Evan Joseph cut the John Jay lead to one, 15-14, with 7:34 on the clock.
  • After the Bloodhounds made it 20-14, Stevenson used a three-point play by Terrell to get within two, 21-19, with 5:07 left.
  • Another Joseph three tied the game 25-25 with 42 seconds remaining before the break.
  • John Jay took a 28-25 lead into intermission.

  • Stevenson took its first lead of the game, 35-34, with 15:30 left on a basket by Kyle Wooldridge.
  • An 8-0 Bloodhound run capped by a dunk gave John Jay a 42-35 lead at the 12:42 mark.
  • After a Wooldridge layup stopped the run, five straight points put John Jay up 10, 47-37, with just under 11 minutes left.
  • The Mustangs scored the next five points to cut the lead in half with 8:44 remaining.
  • A three by Garrison Watkins put the Bloodhounds on top 53-44 at the 7:24 mark.
  • Stevenson cut the lead to seven twice, with a layup by Terrell with just over four minutes left pulling the Mustangs to within 57-50.
  • The Bloodhounds went 7-8 at the free throw line over the final 1:29 to seal the victory.

  • Terrell finished 9-14 from the floor and led Stevenson with 20 points and also grabbed nine rebounds.
  • Johnson tallied 14 points, four rebounds and three assists.
  • Joseph knocked down three of his seven three point attempts and recorded 11 points and added four assists.
  • Norman Hughes handed out six assists and also had a pair of steals.
  • John Jay shot 48.1% overall and knocked down nine of its 23 three-point attempts, while Stevenson shot 40.3% from the floor and 5-19 behind the arc.
  • The Mustangs outrebounded the Bloodhounds 34-31.

  • Stevenson faced Old Westbury in the tournament's consolation round Saturday at 2 pm.
  • The Mustangs return home Saturday, December 7, taking on Lycoming in a 3 pm MAC Commonwealth game at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
