Mustangs Outlast Seahawks For Third Straight

NEWPORT, R.I. - Visiting Stevenson University shot 54% and placed three players in double figures as it outlasted Salve Regina for an 83-75 non-conference men's basketball victory Tuesday evening at the Rodgers Recreation Center. 

  • Salve Regina (0-3) took a 10-5 lead with two free throws at the 15:38 mark. 
  • A four-point play by Cam Harris capped a 9-2 Stevenson (3-1) run and put the Mustangs up 14-12 with 13:38 on the clock.
  • After the Seahawks tied the game, an 8-0 Mustang run put the guests up 22-14 with just over 12 minutes to go in the first frame on a basket by Norman Hughes.
  • Salve countered with nine straight points to take a 23-22 lead at the 9:45 mark.
  • A layup by Mark Terrell 16 seconds later put Stevenson back on top.
  • Hughes made three free throws 5:25 before halftime to make it a 34-27 contest.
  • The Seahawks whittled the lead down to two, 38-36, but Stevenson scored the final five points of the first half, going up 43-36 on a Hughes three with five seconds left.

  • Stevenson extended its lead to 10, 53-43, with 16:19 remaining on a basket by Jaylin Johnson.
  • Salve Regina chipped away and pulled within six, 62-56, on a Mikey Spencer three with just under 10 minutes to go.
  • A free throw with just under seven minutes left pulled the hosts within four, 64-60.
  • A three-point play by Terrell, followed by a Johnson free throw, doubled the Mustang advantage with 5:46 on the clock.
  • Hughes' layup with 4:17 to go again gave Stevenson a 10-point cushion, 72-62.
  • Salve trailed 77-67 at the 1:50 mark, but back-to-back threes pulled the Seahawks within four with 1:38 left.
  • Johnson made a free throw with 1:23 to go to make it 78-73.
  • Salve Regina misfired on three-point attempts on its next two possessions, and Kyle Wooldridge went 5-6 at the free throw line in the final 53 seconds to seal the win.

  • Stevenson finished 27-50 from the floor (54%) and connected on nine of its 19 three-point attempts.
  • The Seahawks shot 44.1% overall and 9-29 behind the arc.
  • The Mustangs took nine more trips to the free throw line and went 20-28 (71.4%) while Salve Regina went 14-19 (73.7%) at the stripe.
  • The hosts held a 32-30 rebound advantage.
  • Terrell scored 14 of his team-high 19 points in the second half and finished 9-13 from the floor.
  • Hughes recorded 14 of his 18 points in the opening 20 minutes, knocking down three three-pointers and going 5-5 at the free throw line.  He has finished in double figures in each of the first four games.
  • Wooldridge was 7-8 at the free throw line and made all four of his field goal attempts, including a three-pointer, en route to 16 points.  His 16 points were one shy of his career high.
  • Evan Joseph finished with seven points, five assists and four rebounds.
  • Harris and Cornelius Bobo each added seven points.

  • Stevenson travels to Marywood to take on John Jay in the first round of the Holiday Inn Express Electric City Classic on Friday at 8 pm.
  • The Mustangs return home Saturday, December 7, taking on Lycoming in a 3 pm MAC Commonwealth game at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
